Turtle Talk

Sea turtles lives are endangered everyday in many different ways. Their deaths are caused by many things people do as a daily routine and don't realize are hurting the population of an amazing animal. We have a few tips here that anyone can follow to help ensure that the lives of many sea turtles are safe.

  1. You should never disturb sea turtles moving to and from the ocean.
    • When sea turtles are making their way from the ocean it is very important to them to make sure that they find a safe place to lay their eggs. If they are disturbed they could become disoriented and lose their way.
  2. Turtles and turtle nests should only be observed from a distance.
    • If a turtle nest is disturbed or messed with because the stress can cause them to leave a feeding area or a their nest.
  3. Never shine any type of light on a sea turtle.
    • Shining lights on turtles will disorient them and they will lose their sense of location when coming to or from a nest.
  4. Make sure all lighting visible from the beach is turned off at night from May through October.
    • If a Turtle sees a light, it will follow the light where ever it is which can be a street light or headlights of a car and ultimately put the turtle in danger.
  5. Keep blinds and windows closed if you live on the beach or are vacationing on the beach.
    • Same reasons as above. *
  6. Never leave beach towels, chairs or umbrellas on the beach overnight.
    • If these items are left on the beach a sea turtle could get caught in one while making it way back and forth to the beach and put it in a lot of danger.`
  7. Never leave any trash, especially plastic, on the beach at all.
    • Trash left on the beach can be swept up into the ocean and become "food" for a turtle.
    • Many turtles die due to the intake of plastic.
  8. Last but not least, never attempt to ride a sea turtle.
    • This may lead to many of the topics listed above. :)
